Stupendo come il precedente di Moore: "The Secret of Kells ". E' una storia sulla perdita: quella di un genitore e quella delle vecchie credenze e su come entrambe possano essere superate attraverso il ricordo.
"My son, remember me in your stories and in your songs"
Come altri, anch'io ho notato degli elementi in comune con i film di Miyazaki: due bambini protagonisti che compiono un viaggio e vengono aiutati da creature animali e fantastiche. La strega Macha poi mi ha fatto tornare in mente Yubaba e Zeniba de La città incantata e forse non per caso, tuttavia parlerei soltanto di similitudini perchè il regista giapponese è solo uno degli artisti che hanno influenzato Moore nel suo percorso di autore e animatore.
Certo riconosce i meriti del sensei:
"I think the critical success of Spirited Away really opened the door for more interesting use of animation as a storytelling medium with its own set of rules."
"Certainly, the spirit and atmosphere of Miyazaki was an influence, and his use of symbols and the way he layers the reality of the world with the subjective reality of the characters."
Ma tra le sue fonti di ispirazione cita anche Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Le superchicche):
"I have also been impressed and inspired by the work of Genndy Tartakovsky, who really makes such cinematic pieces on TV animation budgets and schedules. Some of the episodes of Samurai Jack and Clone Wars are amazing lessons in economy and stylish use of visual language to tell the story."
Richard Williams:

E tra le altre anche la serie Hungarian Folktales (Magyar népmesék) trasmessa in Italia con il titolo "Fiabe ungheresi":
I love the Eastern European animation that uses their indigenous Folkart as a visual style, the series "Hungarian Folktales" by the Kecskemet Animation Film Studio was an inspiration and it was great to be able to work with that studio for a large part of the 2d animation as well.
La colonna sonora di Bruno Coulais al solito merita applausi. Il compositore francese ha lavorato insieme al gruppo folk Kila che lo ha aiutato nel creare musica d'atmosfera squisitamente irlandese.
